Asteriski ry (*) is an association of students of computer science at the University of Turku, founded in 1972. Asteriski has over 400 members. The association’s current home i.e. the office is located in the basement of the Agora building on Vesilinnantie.
The association’s activities are based on caring for its members and promoting their studies. In the Department of Computing, the association is an active advocate of the interests of students and a link between the department and the students. The aim is to improve student relations and solve problems related to studying. The main channels for advocacy are the student representatives in the departmental council and the academic affairs groups.
The association is also active in maintaining relations with other subject associations, unions and industry companies. For example, Asteriski is represented in both the Association of ICT Professionals TIVIA and the Association of IT Students TiTOL and actively collaborates with the unions Tekniikan akateemiset TEK and the Union of Professionals in Natural, Environmental and Forestry Sciences Loimu. For new students, the association is above all a source of information and encouragement to get their studies off to a smooth start.
Free time is an integral part of a student’s life. To this end, the association organises events for its members outside normal study hours, such as parties, sits, sauna evenings and the Pre-Christmas Party. Additionally, Asteriski organises various sports and culture events as well as company visits. The goal is to offer as wide a range of activities as possible to suit the interests of our members. See the events calendar for more information on events.

Asteriski’s facilities
Asteriski and its members have two spaces in their use, Office and Nukkuma. The facilities and their services are managed by the householding coordinator of the board tilat[at]asteriski.fi
Office
The Office is located at the north end of the basement of Agora and it is shared with Guild of Information Technology students Digit ry. As a member you get access to the office according to the opening times of Agora and use the services freely while taking others into account. Without membership the office is open when other members are there and when there is a board member there, which is announced in the events calendar.
At the office you can e.g.:
- Study by the desks or comfortably on the sofas
- Enjoy free coffee
- Buy drinks and snacks from the kiosk
- Leave your packed lunch in the fridge and warm it in the microwave
- Play board games and borrow them home
- Watch movies or YouTube
- Play video games from the wide Steam-library on the computer or on PlayStation and Xbox consoles
- Use office supplies and borrow a calculator for an exam
At the office you may also buy endorsement products and handle membership matter when a board member is there.
Nukkuma
Nukkuma is a space located on the ground floor of Q-house in YO-kylä, jointly managed by three organisations: Asteriski ry, Digit ry and Nucleus ry. The space can be rented by any of the members of these three organisations. There you can for example have a movie night with friends, and the best thing is that renting the space is completely free for members! However, for fire safety reasons, you cannot stay overnight in the space, despite the name. If you want to rent Nukkuma for yourself, please contact the householding coordinator.
